The Marlins and Pirates were scheduled to play two games at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 30 and 31. Not any more. After the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) consulted with players from the two teams about the danger of contracting the Zika virus, the players union and MLB jointly announced Friday that the two games would be played at Marlins Park in Miami instead.
As reported by the A.P., the statement from MLB and the MLBPA said, After discussing the issue with all involved parties, and consulting with federal and Puerto Rican government officials at the highest levels, Commissioner Manfred decided that the players who objected to the trip because of their specific family situations should not be forced to travel to Puerto Rico. Because too many regulars on both Clubs fell into that category, Commissioner Manfred had no choice but to relocate the games.
Puerto Rico has seen 785 confirmed cases of the Zika virus, including a death. The disease is spread by mosquito bites.
